Asked the young man of the Sage, "Sir, have you ever questioned whether or not God was present to you?" "Yes," replied the Sage, "often, but no more." "And," inquired the young man, "what led you to never question God being present to you?" Said the Sage, "When I came to see that the absence of God and the presence of God are equally God. So, now, I never seek either, for each alike is Grace to me."
To empty ourselves of the selfish demand that we must know Grace in a particular way or ways, such as in having predetermined ideas of what Grace is or ought to be to us, allows a spaciousness for Grace to teach us a rich diversity of ways in which Grace appears, including the feeling of absence. Be with the absence long enough, and you will be discovered by Grace there, for in your discovering Grace, Grace unveils its silent beauty to you.
